Vertimowing

Vertimowing – what is it?

Over time your lawn builds up a layer of ‘thatch’. This is the grass that grows sideways under the surface of your lawn.
Why is thatch a problem?
You will notice dry and dead patches and inconsistency of growth and sponginess due to this thatch layer. As it builds up it restricts the growth of your lawn as it creates a sponge that soaks up the water and nutrients that are essential for growth. They simply can’t get to where they are needed.
You use a vertimower. This is a machine with vertical blades that strips out this ‘sponginess’ or sideways growth which is then disposed of. The image below shows the business end of a vertimower.

You might not think it does much but to put it in perspective

The image below shows the amount of thatch removed from and average sized lawn. It is not unusual to fill a 4 cubic metre bin!

So what’s the benefit?

This image gives an example of one pass with a vertimower, you can see on the left the lawn as it was and then with the thatch layer stripped out.
So what’s the benefit? Your lawn receives a complete refresh and a chance to start again but this time, because the root system is already established and there is now nothing to restrict the permeability of the soil, your lawn will receive all the water and nutrition it needs as the thatch layer is not withholding it anymore.

The following image demonstrates how the lawn looks after the vertimow is complete and ready to grow again.

Several machines are used to achieve this result and you can see the full fleet below

Finally, the last image shows how the lawn looked before and after the vertimow.

It is recommended to have your lawn regularly renovated to keep it in bowling green condition.
